Every channel in one ledger: import the reports the stores send you

A press selling in several stores handles a dozen report files a month in a dozen formats. The sales tab reads them by their headers and shows direct plus outside in one line.

En bref : The outside sales import on the sales tab takes CSV or TSV reports from Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, Apple Books, Kobo or any store, finds the title, units, royalty and date columns by header whatever they are called, handles decimal commas, and shows each channel's units and net beside direct sales. Re-uploading a file replaces its rows.

An industry piece from 2019 counted perhaps a dozen files of sales data a month for a modest press, and up to fifty for one selling into several sectors. Every file has its own columns, its own date format and its own idea of what a unit is. That was true then and it is true now.

How the import reads a file

Upload the report and pick the channel. The importer looks at the first dozen lines for a header row that contains a title column and either a units or a royalty column. It then matches the title, units, royalty or net, date and currency columns by their names, preferring exact matches and skipping anything that looks like a rate, a type or a price. Decimal commas and thousands separators are understood. Each row becomes a line with title, units, net and period.

What you see

The sales tab shows a table by channel and currency: units, net and the number of rows. Above it a single line reads direct plus outside equals total. Upload the same file name again and its earlier rows are replaced, so a corrected report does not double count.

What it does not do

It does not pull from the stores on a schedule, because the stores do not offer that to small presses. It reads what they send you, once, accurately.

Questions

Which stores work?

Any that export CSV or TSV with a header row. KDP, IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, Apple Books and Kobo reports have been tested.

What if the headers are unusual?

The importer tells you when it finds no usable rows. Renaming the header cells to Title, Units and Royalty makes any file readable.

Does outside revenue count toward payouts?

No. Those stores pay you directly. The import exists so the press sees everything in one place.
